Definition of Levels of Carvers
NOVICE - Carvers who have NOT won a first, second, or third best-of-show, or ten first place ribbons in the novice or intermediate level in any show or competition.
INTERMEDIATE - Carvers who have progressed beyond the novice level (see above). A carver cannot enter this class who has won a first, second or third best-of-show, or ten first place ribbons in intermediate level in any show or competition.
OPEN - All carvers may enter this level. This class must include carvers who have won a first, second, or third best-of-show, or ten first place ribbons in intermediate level in any show or competition.
Awards
Cash prizes will be awarded in the following events.  California Waterfowl Carver of the Year, Traditional Hunting Decoy Pairs, Traditional Shorebirds, Pickleweed Head purchase award, and Decorative miniature Canvasback purchase award. These are purchase awards (the prize money buys the 1st place bird).
First, second and third place ribbons will be awarded in all species classes.  There will also be first, second, and third best of show for most categories. Honorable mention ribbons will be awarded when called for in the opinion of the judges. If there are five or more carvings entered in the miscellaneous class or in any division where they are not specifically listed as a class, a separate class will be opened to judge these carvings.
Acceptable Materials to be Used in Carvings
All parts of entries and compositions will be hand made, preferably of wood or cork, except where needed for strength and support. No casting of any kind or duplicated carvings will be allowed. Styrofoam type carvings are no longer acceptable.
Judging Criteria
In the Decorative Floating, Decorative Life Size, and Decorative Miniature categories, the judges will be looking for: Technique (carving and painting); Interpretation of Subject (realistic portrayal); Artistic Composition; Difficulty of Project; and Consistency among the above.
